Teacher Imprisonment Heats Up Dispute

Diplomatic Tensions Rise

In a rapidly escalating diplomatic row, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán have clashed over the treatment of an Italian teacher imprisoned in Hungary.

The dispute centers around Ilaria Salis, a 39-year-old primary school teacher from Monza, Italy. Salis has been detained in Hungary for over a year after allegedly assaulting a school director during a protest. The incident has sparked outrage in Italy, where Salis is seen as a political prisoner.

On Tuesday, Meloni reached out to Orbán in a phone call to express her concerns about Salis's treatment. The Italian government has also summoned Hungary's ambassador to Italy to protest her continued detention.
