Chicago Cubs Release Closer Hector Neris

Former Astros Reliever Designated for Assignment

Neris Struggled This Season After Stellar 2023 Campaign

The Chicago Cubs have released veteran closer Hector Neris, the team announced Tuesday. The move comes after a disappointing season for the 35-year-old right-hander.

Neris made 46 appearances for the Cubs this season, finishing 33 games and recording 17 saves. However, he struggled with his command, walking 28 batters in 40 2/3 innings.

Neris' release comes as no surprise, as he has been inconsistent all season. He has blown six saves and allowed 10 home runs, both of which are among the highest totals in the National League.

The Cubs are expected to recall right-hander Jack Neely from Triple-A Iowa to take Neris' spot on the roster.

Neris was acquired by the Cubs in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies in December 2021. He was coming off a stellar season in Philadelphia, in which he posted a 6-3 record with a 1.71 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 65 appearances.

However, Neris has not been able to replicate that success in Chicago. He has a 3.89 ERA in 46 games with the Cubs, with 28 walks and 50 strikeouts.

Neris' release is the latest move in a busy offseason for the Cubs, who are looking to rebuild after finishing with a 74-88 record in 2023.
